Stuart Green BSc, MSc, PhD, CEng, MICE, FCIOB, FRICS

Stuart Green graduated in civil engineering from the University of Birmingham in 1979. He thereafter gained several years industry experience with a leading UK national contractor, working on major building and civil engineering projects. He subsequently completed a master’s degree in construction management at Heriot-Watt University before joining the academic staff at the University of Reading in 1987.

He completed his PhD while in full-time employment. He was promoted to associate professor in 1997 and awarded a full professorship in 2002. He later served in several leadership roles within the university, including Head of the School of the Built Environment (2010-2017).

Stuart writes about the construction sector with the benefit of 30 years’ experience of applied research and consultancy. Over the course of his career he has successfully secured over £7.5 million research funding from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). 

His expertise extends beyond academia into UK construction policy and governance, including:

  • Commission for a Sustainable London 2012 (2007-2013) – strategic sustainability assurance for the London Olympics. 
  • Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) (the ‘English Committee’) (2015-2018).
  • Chair of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Innovation and Research (I&R) Panel (2011-2016).
  • EPSRC Manufacturing Advisory Group (2010-2011).
  • EPSRC Peer Review College (2000-date).
  • CIOB Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) (2024-date).

His international experience comprises contributions to academic conferences and/or research assessment exercises in more than 20 countries.
